CanTalk 2.0

This review examines CanTalk, a Cantonese language learning application developed by the Cantonese instructors at the Center for Language Education, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, exclusively for the HKUST community. The app aims to facilitate practical language acquisition for beginners seeking to communicate effectively in everyday situations within Hong Kong.

CanTalk provides targeted vocabulary and expressions that enable users to navigate social interactions both on and off campus, including making friends, exploring the city, dining out at local eateries, bargaining in markets, and immersing themselves in the local culture.

Key features include:

• An approach focused on communicative competence and thematic content
• A curriculum tailored to novice learners’ immediate needs
• Four core units: Making Friends, On the Move, Pigging Out, Partaking in the Fun
• Additional resources such as a Sound System, Grammar Cards, Culture Cards, and a comprehensive Glossary
• Authentic scenarios featuring real-life characters
• Interactive tasks supported by videos and images to enhance engagement
